The Western South Dakota Juvenile Services Center (JSC)  serves as a regional youth detention facility for Pennington, Fall River, Custer, Meade, Lawrence, Butte, and Harding Counties. The facility remains one of only three detention facilities in the nation authorized to house federal juveniles.

Changing the trajectory of youth in custody begins with education and skill development. JSC supports better outcomes through weekly programming that includes Corrective Thinking, life skills training, education, religious services, mental health counseling, chemical dependency and sex offender treatment, vocational and career development.

The Juvenile Services Center also offers alternatives to detention through electronic monitoring programs, including home detention and community monitoring.

Located on the JSC campus, the Arise Youth Center provides additional alternatives to incarceration through its Reception Center, Shelter Care, and Evening Reporting Center. The program also operates under a grant to house and support homeless and runaway youth.
