This page serves to provide the public with an update on the various projects that the Highway Department is working on. The information is updated monthly and represents the previous month's projects. 

Major Road Projects

  • Scull Construction will be handling the addition to the Rapid Valley Elementary School, which will involve utility and approach work associated with the project.

Major Bridge Projects

  • JV Bailey Co. is in the process of a deck overlay project on 52-457-460 Lower Spring Creek Road bridge.
  • A bridge on Paulsen Road 52-983-340 will need more work than anticipated, and engineers are reviewing options. KLJ Engineering has begun the design work, a BIG grant will be applied for, and work is anticipated to be scheduled for 2028.

Division Updates

Hill City
  • The crew closed South Rochford Road for a recent protest regarding mining in the area.
  • Bridge washing is completed, and sweeping is underway.
  • Drainage work on Palmer Gulch Road and Palmer Creek Road.
  • Culvert removed on Edelweiss Road.
  • Spot gravel on Mystic Road and Edelweiss Road.
  • The crew is gearing up for the application of magnesium chloride (Mag Water) on Hill City Division roads and assisting in other divisions as needed.
    • This is the first year Pennington County highway workers are applying mag water, not using a contractor, allowing for more roads to be treated for the same budgeted amount.
New Underwood
  • The gravel crew has moved to the New Underwood area, graveling 158th Avenue, 161st Avenue, 156th Avenue, and 226th Street.
  • Sweeping has also begun, and road maintenance continues.
Rapid City
  • Tree work is finished for the present time.
  • Crews are working on sweeping, shoulder maintenance, and guardrail repair in the Rapid City and Hill City areas.
  • Maintaining gravel roads.
  • Cleaning drop inlets.
  • Deep patching in the Nemo and Silver City areas.
  • The new mastic machine is being used in Rapid Valley.
  • Mowing will begin shortly, and the IGNITE program will be assisting with drainage mowing and clearing this month.
Wall
  • Shoulder maintenance and mastic repairs on Creighton Road.
  • Spot graveling and gravel road maintenance
  • Bridge cleaning is done.
  • The Wall Foreman, who has had experience with a mastic machine at previous employment, is familiarizing himself with utilizing this machine for Pennington County roads and has assisted Rapid Division with some training.

Major Weather Events

Recent moisture has allowed crews to maintain gravel roads more effectively.
