Law Enforcement Division - Patrol Division
Captain Kraig Wood commands the 3 Lieutenants, 7 Sergeants, 37 Deputies and the Reserve Deputy Program that make up the PCSO Patrol Division. This division is responsible for providing timely response to calls for service, maintaining a visible law enforcement presence, and working with the community to overcome issues and concerns.
Pennington County spans over 110 miles east to west and is home to the majestic Mt. Rushmore National Monument and the beautiful Badlands National Park. The PCSO Patrol Division is based out of Rapid City, SD with satellite offices located in Hill City, Keystone, New Underwood and Wall. Our #1 goal is to ensure Pennington County is a safe place to live, raise a family, work and visit for our residents and visitors.
Patrol Division - Contract Cities
The Pennington County Sheriff's Office has partnered with four communities within Pennington County to provide law enforcement services. The communities of Hill City, Keystone, New Underwood, and Wall receive the benefit of having full-time Deputy Sheriffs living and working in their communities. They also receive the benefit of the additional law enforcement and community resources the Pennington County Sheriff's Office has to offer.
At the same time, this partnership allows rural citizens and visitors in Pennington County to receive timely professional law enforcement services provided by the Pennington County Sheriff's Office.
Hill City, SD
Hill City, SD is nestled in the Black Hills approximately 28 miles west of Rapid City on Hwy 16. Hill City currently contracts for three Deputy Sheriffs working in and around their community. Keystone, SD near Mt. Rushmore, is located approximately 22 miles west of Rapid City on Hwy 16A. Keystone currently contracts for one Deputy Sheriff working in and around their community year around, with an additional deputy in the summer months to assist with the additional call volume and traffic related to tourist season.
