Captain Taylor Sperle heads the Criminal Investigations Division (CID), a group of specialized deputies responsible for the investigation of People Crimes and Domestic Violence/Property Crimes. The division includes thirteen Investigators, two Victim Specialists, one Crime Intelligence Analyst, one Computer Forensics Examiner, two Staff Assistants, and two Rapid City Police Department Detectives who assist with domestic violence and sexual assault cases.
The Sheriff's Office partners with the Rapid City Police Department and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation to share duties with the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit (ICAC) and the Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team (UNET). The Investigations Division also handles coroner duties and oversees the School Resource Deputy Program.
Domestic Violence & Property Crimes Section
The Domestic Violence & Property Crimes section of the PCSO Investigations Division is responsible for investigating crimes involving Simple Assault/Domestic Violence, Aggravated Assault/Domestic Violence, Violation of Protection Order, Violation of No Contact Bond, Stalking, and other crimes where the primary motive is financial gain or vandalism. These include:
- Residential burglaries
- Business burglaries
- Vehicle burglaries
- Vehicle thefts
- Embezzlement
- Forgeries
- Insufficient funds checks
- Closed account checks
- Vandalism
- Theft
- Identity Theft
- Credit card fraud
Investigations Division - People Crimes
The People Crimes section of the PCSO Investigations Division is responsible for investigating all major crimes of violence committed against individuals, including: homicide, rape/sexual assault, child abuse, aggravated assault, abduction/kidnapping, and robbery.
Investigations Division - Computer Crimes
The Forensic Computer Unit was created in 2011 to investigate internet and computer crimes. This unit is comprised of Investigators from the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Detectives from Rapid City Police Department and Agents with the State Division of Criminal Investigations.
