Pennington County Fireworks Regulations
Legal Fireworks Dates (Countywide)
Under South Dakota Codified Law 34-37-19, Pennington County allows the discharge of fireworks during the following periods:
- June 27 – July 5, 2026 (until midnight)
- December 27, 2026 – January 1, 2027
Reminder: Please clean up all fireworks debris after use to help keep our communities safe and clean.
Rapid Valley Area – Voluntary Curfew
The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is requesting a voluntary fireworks curfew at 11:00 PM in the Rapid Valley area.
Deputies will be on extra patrol to help ensure safe and courteous celebrations.

Municipal Fireworks Regulations
Below are local ordinances for municipalities within Pennington County:

Allowed on private property with landowner’s permission.
Prohibited if grassland fire danger is rated "High" or above.

No fireworks allowed within city limits.
Novelty fireworks only: sparklers, poppers, snappers, and toy caps.

Fireworks may be banned by resolution in dry years.

- Fines up to $500
- Jail time up to 30 days
- Or both
Increased enforcement will occur in:
- Areas within 1 mile of Rapid City limits
- Rapid Valley after 11:00 PM
- Situations involving reckless or negligent use
