Pennington County Keeps Citizens Safe and Informed with Public Warning Messages

Rapid City-Pennington County Emergency Management wants to remind residents about Public Warning Messages, an additional way to keep residents, staff, and emergency personnel safe and informed with quick and reliable emergency notifications. Pennington County will use Public Warning Messages to communicate with citizens and businesses during emergencies and other critical events. Residents are encouraged to register to receive these alerts.

Powered by Everbridge, the Public Warning Messages are used to alert residents about a variety of events, ranging from severe weather, fires, floods and other rapidly developing, life-threatening emergencies. Messages will be sent to residents on their preferred contact paths—cell phone, text, home phone, email, fax, pager, and more—to ensure real-time access to potentially lifesaving information. Businesses and residents listed in the Pennington County 911 database (landlines) have been automatically subscribed to alerts by phone, but citizens can self-register and provide additional contact information paths.

“Public Warning Messages allows for another layer of critical messaging to add to the other already active Emergency Messaging in Pennington County. We have a commitment to ensure public safety, community awareness, and emergency response. To uphold this, when critical information is available, we need to reach our residents as quickly and reliably as possible. If we can’t reach you, we can’t warn you,” said Dustin Willett, Rapid City – Pennington County Emergency Management Director. “The Public Warning Messages allows us to disseminate this information across all types of devices, ensuring residents have access to real-time public information when they need it the most.”

Personal information submitted to the Public Warning Messages will only be used for emergency notifications and alerts. Questions about the collection of this information can be directed to Pennington County Emergency Management via the Contact page.

Public Warning Messages Tips:

  • Caller ID:
If you have selected notification methods that have caller ID, a call sent out from Public Warning Messages will show 605-791-1442. If you call this number you will hear a recorded message. 

  • Web Address:
Pennington County Emergency Management messages sent to Public Warning Message Subscribers (and Wireless Emergency Alerts) may contain a web address to click on. This is due to character limitations for some forms of messaging. The web address http://pshub.us may accompany some messages sent to the public. When you click on this web address it takes you to the Pennington County Public Safety Hub which may contain additional information during an active incident. 

  • How to confirm receipt of a message:
A Public Warning Message sent to subscribers will ask the recipient to confirm receipt of the message.
You can confirm receipt by replying "Yes" to a message sent by email or text.

  • Do I need to confirm receipt of the message?:
When you reply with "yes"  to any notification methods you have selected in your profile, the system will recognize that you have received the message and it will no longer try to reach you on other notification methods you have selected in your profile. In some cases, you may still receive the message from another notification method due to the fast speed of message dissemination.
