Self Screening

Many people do not know whether they need treatment for addiction. There are several questions you can ask yourself to help determine your needs:

  1. Do you consume alcohol or use drugs every day?
  2. Have you missed work because of your alcohol or drug use?
  3. Do most of your friends drink alcohol or use drugs every day?
  4. Have you ever used prescription medications to get high?
  5. Have you ever tried to stop your alcohol or drug use only to find that you could not do so?
  6. Do you experience blackouts?
  7. Do you regret your behavior when you are drunk or high and/or later apologize for it?
  8. Do you get high or drunk when you are alone?
  9. Have your friends and family expressed concern over your drinking and/or drug use?
  10. Do you no longer do things you used to enjoy because you are either drunk or high?
  11. When you awake, do you immediately look for alcohol or drugs?
  12. Has your alcohol or drug use caused you financial problems?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may have a problem. If you answered yes to most or all of them, you need help. Many times, individuals who are addicted to alcohol and/or drugs have personal issues, such as low self-esteem, low self-respect, and lack of responsibility.
