On January 1, 1998, the Pennington County Sheriff was appointed by the County Commission as the Pennington County Coroner. The Sheriff's Office currently has 38 sworn Deputy Coroners.

Coroner responsibilities include investigating deaths that occur as a result of an accident, homicide, suicide or natural death that occurs outside the care of a medical provider. The Sheriff's Office investigated 355 death cases in 2019.
